New Year’s Eve – that one night of the year that people plan months in advance just to be sure that it is going to be the best night of their year. In most cases, those expectations can hardly live up to reality and more than a few people will end up disappointed with their night. But don’t fret – Travelettes are here to help and give you some tips on how to make the most of your New Year’s Eve! Too ensure you’ll have a travelicious night on the 31st of December, we picked some spectacular things with which you cannot go wrong.

1. Go to Finland and celebrate NYE twice in one night

You don’t need to board a plane that flies back between time zones to celebrate New Year’s twice a night. The city of Haparanda, Sweden, lies right by the Swedish-Finnish river, dividing the two countries – and time zones! This gives you the unique possibility to just hop over the river from time zone to time zone in only 5 minutes. Tornio, Finland is ahead of time, so you want to go there first, watch the Finnish fireworks, kiss a bearded man. After that, simply drive over a bridge that connects the two cities and celebrate the New Year a second time with the Swedes. Tornio has an airport and many people take the opportunity to spend the night in one of the famous ice hotels in Lapland.

2. Stay at the Tower Hotel, London

Definitely a unique place to celebrate NYE is the London Tower Bridge. Not standing in the crowd on the bridge itself, but at a far better place: The Tower Hotel. Get a candle light dinner served to your room and enjoy the view on London Eye Fireworks and the London skyline from your hotel bed. If you are in the mood for a big night out after all that, check out the London Alternative Parties Guide by Time Out Magazine.

4. A French night out in Berlin

If you like to end the old year in a quiet and romantic fashion followed by a party extraordinaire, Berlin is the place to be. Bookatable is a handy online platform, where you can book a place at your restaurant of choice before your trip. You can choose by city, type or price and book right away, 24hrs a day. So why not book a table for 2 at the romantic restaurant “La Raclette” for some haute French cuisine right before hopping over to the infamous Bassy Cowboy Club. Nino Ferrer, Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg and a live band called “The Kitchenettes” put you right back in time to the 1960ies. So dress up in your prettiest petticoat and watch this tutorial for an original pin up hairdo and get your tickets here.

5. Lock your lips in Venice

Are you already worrying about who you are going to kiss when the clock strikes 12? Then get yourself to Venice! More than 60,000 people come together on Venice’s San Marco Square to celebrate the next year in locking up lips as part of the largest communal kiss, as a symbol of love, peace and brotherhood. Maybe a hot Italian Casanova is already waiting for you?

6. Hogmanay festival in Edinburgh

Dust off your kilt and raise a glass of Single Malt! Said to be the biggest New Year’s festival in the world, Edinburgh’s 12 day festival Hogmanay kicks off on December 31st with a colourful torchlight parade, before several concerts, DJ Sets and a huge street party will make you dance your way into the new year. At midnight, be prepared to sing the “Auld Lang Syne” together with your other 80,000 Scottish friends, accompanied by the famous Hogmanay fireworks from Edinburgh Castle. This year’s headliners are Friendly Fires, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Vaccines and Marc Ronson amongst others. Find out more at the Hogmanay event page.

7. Relax with friends in winter wonderland

Always popular, for good reason, is to book a chalet or an apartment in the mountains and to celebrate the New Year with a handful of good friends, a generous dinner and a large pot of mulled wine. One of the best places to do this is Laax in Switzerland, a ski resort that is popular with snowboard and ski fans alike. We recently went there and loved staying at rocksresort which rents out beautiful and stylish apartments for up to 4 people. That way you have all your friends in one place and the freedom of booking additional apartments, should more friends want to join you on your NYE adventure. And the best part: you get to start the new year with clean white powder snow right outside your window…

When not traveling, I myself prefer NYE at home with my best friends, a cheese fondue, fortune games and a good vinyl of Edith Piaf. How about you?
