To celebrate Travelettes’ 4th birthday all team members came together virtually, answered questions, made confessions about their backpacks and ranked everything from beaches over cities and backpacking destinations. Our authors are spread over Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK and South Africa , with two currently travelling Southeast Asia – and more land is yet to be taken.

I am a Travelette

Together we have lived in over 25 cities spread across the globe, travelled over 70 countries, found our favourite beaches in 10 different countries, have been on the road for several years and took about 1 million pictures – at least. We have slept in cars, tents, fine hotel beds, luxury suites or on some local’s couch. Over the years and months you have learnt a lot about our intentions and personalities – but did you know, that not even all of us have ever been on an actual backpacking trip? To find out who “cheated”, and much more about us dig into this little Q&A!

Where do you live and how did you end up here?
So far my journey took me from a small town in former East Germany, over San Francisco, New York, Barcelona, London and Paris to Berlin. That’s where I live now – the best place ever.

What’s your day job – and dream job?
I make most of my money as a photographer shooting travel, fashion and documentary. A lot of the time I work for various magazines, both national and international. My dream job is to travel around the world and take photos for a living, pretty much what I do right now. I honestly cannot think of a better job to have.

Is there this one trip you will always remember?
I once spent an unforgettable 4 days in the Amazon jungle in Brazil, right by Manaus together with my best friend. We slept in hammocks, got eaten alive by mosquitos and didn’t have electricity but that made it all the more magical.

Where do you see in 5 years?
I would love for this blog to continue to encourage others, and especially women, to travel more, drop the excuses and the fears and just do it. It would be cool to grow our team and get involved in more projects that are close to our hearts, especially with regard to those less fortunate than us.

Famous last words?
Travel lots, learn more, inspire others always. Or to say it in the words of Mahatma Ghandi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
When my sister’s (Sophie, a long-standing member of travelettes) visa in Melbourne drew to an end, I decided to cheer her up about coming home by writing ’10 reasons Britannia rules’. She sent it through to Katja. I suddenly got the writing bug again and started sending over bits and pieces and then was delighted when I was offered the chance to join.

Tell us a little bit about your life.
At 19 I took off on my first, big trip and ended up hanging out in Bali for over 4 months. Back in the UK, I ended up moving to Bristol when I got a job at an international, magazine publishing house, but after a brief introduction to sub-editing I jacked in my flat and job and took off to Indonesia for a few months with one of my best guy friends. Who I then fell in love with.

Where will your next trip take you?
I’m typing this up in a teeny internet cafe off Khao San road on day one of a five week trip to Thailand, Cambodia and probably Malaysia.

What’s your favourite city?
After Bristol, I’m tempted to say Barcelona. It’s just so beautiful. I have a little daydream of spending a summer there, building on the small amount of Spanish I can speak and living in one of those little, shuttered apartments with flowers round the balcony.

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
A journalist friend of mine knows Katja and likes my writing – she just brought the two together. Apparently I’m funny for a German.

Could you decide on your favourite beach?
Noetzie in Knysna, South Africa. Not only does it feel like a private beach, but also comes with the most beautiful backdrop of miniature castles all around.

Where can we find you?
After graduating from FIT in New York I started working as a fashion assistant which was very The Devil Wears Prada, but also allowed me to go to some beautiful places and having a client pay for it. Eventually I decided I needed a change of scenery and moved to Cape Town where I have quite a bit of family and a lot more sunshine.

Tell us about a magical travel moment.
When I was in Morocco we slept at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dune in the desert. It was too hot to be in the tents so we had pulled our mattresses outside onto the sand. It was eerie and beautiful with a warm desert wind, the moon and some snoring camels close by. We were all too excited to sleep so we ended up telling ghost stories all evening. Eventually the nomad family that we were staying with had to shush us because we were giggling too much.

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
By chance, actually. I had written a piece about Manhattanhenge for another online magazine but they just took forever to publish it. So my sister suggested to email it to “that travel blog” she had discovered a while back. While I thought this was a one time contribution, Katja got in touch afterwards and invited me to join the team. Now my one year anniversary is quickly approaching.

Tell us a little about your life.
Born and raised in Northern Germany, I attended University in the tiny town of Oldenburg and before fulfilling my childhood dream of moving to New York City! After my visa expired I moved to Berlin in April and look forward to embarking on camera-equipped exploration tours around this amazing place!

This might be obvious – but which is your favourite city?
Of course – the City. However Rome is close to catching up! To me, both cities have that certain atmosphere that just takes you in and showers you with inspiring energy.

Which was your favourite backpacking trip?
Confessions of a Travelette: I never went backpacking. Instead, my loyal travel companion is a bright red and sticker plastered suitcase which is just big enough to keep me from overpacking.

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
Even before I left to travel full time in October 2011 I was aware of Travelettes and loved the concept and the content being produced. When I started travel blogging I pitched some guest posts to Katja, they were published and an invitation to join followed. Yay!

Tell us about your favourite backpacking trip.
Confession time: I’m not a backpacker. I love suitcases. Preferably hard-shell, glossy, four-wheeled ones. But my favourite “flashpacking” trip was the five month SE Asia, NZ and Oz trip I took at the beginning of my new “on the road lifestyle”.

What’s up for your next trip?
After 21 months going from one place to another and never staying still for more than 3 months we’ve just “moved” to Amsterdam for at least six months and it’s possible we’ll stay longer. But my travels will continue. I’m hoping to see friends in the south of France soon and in September I’m going on my first cruise to Tunisia!

Decision time: your favourite city?
This is tough. My heart says London (but my sensible head does not!) and my future says Amsterdam. But I also have soft spots for Montpellier, San Francisco, Naples, Berlin, Seattle, Bologna, Sydney, Lisbon and any city that has cycling lanes!

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
I met Katja at the book presentation last summer in Vienna and we talked about contributing as a guest blogger. I did exactly that in winter and voilà, as Katja was searching for a new member situated in Berlin, I was in.

Where did you live so far?
I was born and raised in Vienna and also studied there. I always wanted to get out, so I signed up for a social year in Denmark and an Erasmus semester in Reykjavik. About a year ago I moved to Berlin because I’m in love with the film festival culture here. This fall I’m moving on to Glasgow for my master’s degree but hope to be back afterwards.

Which was your favourite trip ever?
That’s a tough one, but the best was probably my two month trip through British Columbia and Alberta last year. Confession: I hate my backpack – I’m sure it secretly eats chocolate every night to gain weight.

Which hidden beach can you recommend?
There’s a little island just off the shore of the village Pomena on Mljet, Croatia. Get one of the fishermen to bring you over there and you’ll have the entire island just for you!

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
I met Ina, a former Travelette during a surfcamp in France and she told me all about Travelettes. I immediately identified with the concept and got all excited. I love backpacking, discovering the world, but also high heels, listick and girly nailpolish. I simply had to join!

Can you name your best backpacking trip so far?
I did an amazing backpacking trip through Guatemala, Belize and Mexico where I’ve seen some absolutely stunning and magical places. Semuc Champey, for example, looked like paradise and Mexico had some of the most breathtaking beaches I have ever been to.

What’s your favourite city?
San Vicente de la Barquera – not a city actually… it is a tiny surfer-town in Spain, but I absolutely fell in love with this place.

Which moment comes to your mind when you think about incredible travel experiences?
When I was in Mexico we took the chance to swim with whale sharks. After I overcame my anxiety to get eaten alive I actually enjoyed swimming with them. Their movements were so smooth and elegant (even though they were massive).

How did you get involved with the Travelettes?
When Katja called for new contributors about a year ago, I was road-tripping through the Argentinian Andes but typed a guest post on my iPhone and sat in front of a prehistoric computer for hours to get it through the slowest internet connection on earth… And ended up joining the team for good after submitting two more posts in January!

How did your wanderlust start?
I’m originally from Toulouse, France, but have been moving pretty much every year since I finished high school! For a year abroad I picked the furthest destination I could think of to go on exchange: Australia. I loved Sydney so much I actually lied to my school (something about a fictive internship) in order to stay there for an extra year.

What’s your dream job?
I am now surviving as a freelance copywriter. The plan (and dream job) is to get more freelance missions and take on travelling long-term before the end of the year!

What’s up next?
I’m off to San Francisco and Portland during the second half of August, before hitting Burning Man festival for the 3rd time!

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
My friends encouraged me to start writing about my travels publicly for a long time (I did it before on a private blog) and sent me a link to Travelettes. They thought that I would be a good fit – and were absolutely right! I contacted Katja and got lucky.

Where do you currently live?
Lovely Copenhagen has been my home for the past 4 months, but I’m heading to New York for a couple of months – really exited about that!

Can you recall a magical travel memory?
A first kiss in the pouring rain on the top of the Montjüic in Barcelona, while watching the city lights of the never sleeping Barca.

What was your favourite backpacking trip?
The only proper backpacking trip of mine was my first round the world trip. Many incredible things happened on that journey but here’s a couple of my finest memories. My first time on a surfboard in Byron Bay, all amazing trips in the West Coast of United States, skydives all around, dancing on the main stage of one of the biggest festival in the world and accidentally staying one night in the same apartment with a slightly older male nudist.

How did you get involved with Travelettes?
While being at Uni, I began writing for the student newspaper and trawled blogs for good material to write about. I followed Katja’s Glam Canyon blog and saw she was launching a travel blog just as I was about to go off backpacking! I got in contact with her and after submitting a guest post, I joined the team!

What’s your day job…. and dream job?
I’ve just begun an internship as a Publishing Manager at The Viral Ad Network (plus I also work at a crazy bar at night)… but my dream job would of course to be paid to travel around the world reviewing and exploring!

Which is your favourite city?
I went backpacking around SE Asia and Australasia and fell in love with Melbourne. I ended up living out there for 2 ½ years but finally had to come home and ‘face reality’. However, I heart that city!

Did something magical ever happen to you on a trip?
Yes! Taking a dingy out to sea at 2am to jump in the Thai sea and watch the algae glow green and sparkle when you splashed the water. I also saw more shooting stars in that excursion than any other time in my whole life.
