Croatia often conjures images of beachside parties and holidays along the shore in Split or Dubrovnik. Zagreb, the capital city, isn’t always a tourist’s first destination. Last winter I worked at a hostel in Zagreb for a little under a month. Winter is definitely the slow season in Croatia and finding places to go out in my free time was not always easy. One place that never let me down was Medika.

Medika is a former factory turned squat where you can find anything from workshops, to fleamarkets, to concerts and parties. I came here for a metal concert, a dub dance party, and an art show. If there are covers they tend to be very cheap, and alcohol sold inside is relatively inexpensive as well. Keep coming back to see what room the next show will be in, what new graffitti will appear, and who is hanging out. You’re sure to meet some of Zagreb’s most alternative young people and experience a bit of the local subculture. You might even ask to host your own art show, or collaborate on a workshop or other event….
