It’s a little ironic that I’m about to tell you about a great summer destination as I sit on the sofa in my flat under a blanket, wearing thermal undies and two pairs of ski socks. However, there is nothing like a bit of imaginative escapism to warm you up during a long cold winter!

“Gozo? Huh?! Where?” Yes, that’s what most people say when I mention the fact that’s where I usually spend my summers. Gozo is a little island which forms a part of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is stuck in a time warp and most buildings seem to be undergoing some form of never-ending construction. There is only one set of traffic lights, there are more churches than people ohh and you won’t spend a penny because there is literally nothing to buy! However Gozo is quite possibly the most relaxed place to spend a holiday because it really gives you an opportunity to escape from the world without having to jet to the other side of the planet.

I’ve been coming to this little island for years now and I’m very very fond of its backward approach to life. The sea is incredibly blue and it is one of the best places to go scuba diving and snorkelling in Europe; one of the must do things would be to take a boat to the even tinier island of Comino so you can snorkel in a place called “the blue lagoon”. It’s warm enough to start swimming at Easter until usually the start of November. Also, the food is heavily influenced by Italian cuisine and you have the opportunity to eat some great seafood dishes for really reasonable prices.

So next time you’re looking for a respite from the trials and tribulations of everyday life I’d strongly recommend escaping to Gozo for a well deserved holiday in the sun.
