As you know, we have started a series introducing you to our favorite traveling couples. Next up in our spotlight are Romy and Luke of the blog “Tag Along Travellers”, a couple whose motto is “dream, believe and make it happen!”

Romy & Luke: Traveling instead of wedding-planning

Though Romy and Luke come from a very small country, they’ve already travelled most of the world. “We both live by the mantra ‘dream, believe and make it happen’” they first tell me when I interview them. “This belief has been one of the main reasons why we have fallen in love, and it is what feeds the adventure in our relationship. Following our dreams has always given us opportunities to further learn more about ourselves, as individuals and as a couple.”

It took Luke 2 years before he proposed to Romy, and last April they got engaged! “That said, we chose not to follow the normal way of doing things” they explain. “We didn’t want to have secure jobs, buy a home and spend all our energy in planning our wedding. Instead, we wanted to strengthen our relationship by going on a 9 month adventure. We decided to leave everything and travel, going back to Malta a few days before our wedding. We’ll have no job, no home, nothing fixed, except for our love that is continuously growing through shared, amazing experiences.”

Their adventure started 6 months ago. “We first flew to Colombia and then set out for a 2 month Europe road trip in our car which took us to 11 countries. And we are now in Asia.” When I ask them how they choose their travel destinations, they answer: “We love indulging in new cultures. It’s hard to choose one particular country. Let’s just say that our favourite continent is Asia, so far. Each and every country has its own uniqueness, but countries there are special to us. The lifestyle of the peoples living in these countries makes us feel so far away from home. They gives the opportunity to experience a completely different way of doing things. And it’s cheap, with many adventurous activities to do, and offers plenty of amazing landscapes.”

Romy and Luke are currently in Pokhara, Nepal. “We have just decided to go up a 5,000m high mountain around the Annapurna region, to visit the highest lake in the world, that will take a week to accomplish. After this adventure, we don’t know what we’re going to do exactly. We plan to go further south, visiting Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines. But all this is just a concept for now. Too much planning would take away the sense of adventure. The beauty is following our intuition to enjoy the spontaneity that life offers.”

The couple documents all their adventures on their blog, “Tag Along Travellers”. “We always kept a journal of what we do, and we always took pictures of places we visited, and shared them on social media. And we figured that if we could combine the two, we could create a website that would serve as a way to keep in touch with family and friends. But now it has evolved. As we’ve said, our mantra is “Dream. Believe and Make it Happen”, and so we want to inspire people to live their dream life. We give travel tips and information about the places that we visit, but we’d like to go beyond that. We’d like to offer our services to help people achieve their travel dreams.”

Romy and Luke are living theirs, and collecting new memories along the way. “What we notice about these memories is that we actually remember them all, vividly. Memories are only based on perception, as we find that an experience is good or bad depending on our approach to each situation.” The couple has learned a lot throughout their trip and has only one piece of advice for couples who would like to try the same adventure. “Go for it. Travelling as a couple will strengthen your relationship in ways you can’t imagine before you actually head off for the experience. Whether you are planning to go on a weekend break, or like us, you want to leave it all behind, we say just do it. Life is short, and its duration is measured by experiences, not by time. We can’t express how grateful we are that we’ve always chosen to live by our mantra. In fact, we’ve already started seeing the fruits of this journey.” And if you are curious to know what that means, check their 7 lessons we have learnt through as travelling as a couple post!
