Does any of this sound familiar?
1. Every time you see someone posting about their travels, you’ll feel unreasonable jealous, and you’ll probably have to press unfollow to suppress the travel-envy.
2. The same buildings you pass on a daily basis will seem pretty dull compared to the incredible historical monuments that you’ve visited on your travels.
3. You’ll unexpectedly miss hearing a mirage of accent everywhere you go and you’ll get bored of your native tongue.
4. Eating out will never be quite as exciting, as you will understand what everything on the menu is. You’ll no longer experience the thrill of guessing what you are ordering.
5. Having to be aware of what day of the week it is will really start to suck… Suddenly going out on a Tuesday night will become a little harder to justify.
6. You’ll stop posting photos on social media as nothing will be as cool as those epic sunset snaps and camel-riding selfies that you have on your feed.
7. Shopping at a mall will seem a little mundane compared to bartering at bustling market places and buying handmade knickknacks from roadside vendors.
8. No longer will you have other travellers to share stories with, and your friends from home will quickly lose interest every time you bring up “that one time in Paris…â€
9. Birthday parties will become slightly depressing, as there is no way all the friends you’ve made in different corners of the world will be able to attend.
10. You’ll now spend all your time thinking, dreaming and planning your next trip and will struggle to focus on anything else.
11. Having an alarm to wake you up for work every morning will initially be very confusing and confronting.
12. You’ll no longer be able to use the excuse “I’m on holiday!†to justify eating delicious pastries for breakfast or drinking cocktails before 5pm.
13. You’ll have the sad realization of how much you dislike the routines of cooking and cleaning and paying bills and wonder why you ever came home.
14. After living out of a suitcase/ backpack for so long, you’ll realize how much useless stuff you hoard and get frustrated that you have any of it.
15. No one will really be able to understand the experience you’ve just had, no matter how much you try to explain it, and that will get frustrating.
16. As much as you love your friends from home, you’ll miss the excitement of meeting new people every day from all walks of life.
17. Once you’ve realized you’ve spent all your money on your trip, you’ll have to start actually being financially responsible.
18. Your heart will never remain in one place again. Instead, you’ll have little pieces of it scattered across the globe, each piece held by the incredible people that have come in to your life all across the world.
19. Suddenly your phone will work all the time and you won’t have the liberation of being disconnected from the cyber-world.
20. You’ll no longer be content with the ordinary.
You’ll constantly crave the excitement of the new. The rush of taking off in an airplane and landing in an unknown place. Exploring a new city for the first time. Tasting a local cuisine for the first time. Seeing a famous landmark for the first time. Discovering the real culture of a country for the first time. Consistency will quickly become boring, and reality will become harder to face than ever.
