Market Portraits – Mexico
No matter where I travel, I always keep an eye out for the local market. Often, markets are prime spots to really get a feel for the culture you’re traveling through. A place sustained by and for the locals, the market is to the city what the kitchen is to the house. As a vibrant center of commerce, family living and socialising, it’s a perfect place to witness and portray the city’s inhabitants in their essence, as raw as it comes.
Mexico‘s market culture is second to none and has been a great source of wonder and inspiration to me. Here are some of the portraits I shot at markets in Acapulco and Mexico City.

love your pictures mami!! xx
these are beautiful katja! i’d love to see some color ones too.
These are most likely to be your best pictures, ever (in my opinion, let’s say!).
Can’t wait for more. Sunny regards from Nepal.

Great photo-essay, I love local markets, I wrote a post myself about it!
Great photography, moody and uplifting at the same time. Would have loved to see some color versions too, Mexico is overflowing with them.

thanks phil and henrik!
love these photos – they are amazing!!
Nice black & white photos… I really like the street photography.
Fantastic photos, especially in B&W! Exploring the markets in Mexico City is one of my favorite pastimes, though I rarely manage to get photos as good as these.
Gorgeous!
What is it that some of them have on their foreheads?
Gorgeous photos! I always look for a market when I travel too – its a great way to see and meet the locals and take a bit of a look into their daily lives – I recently went to a fleamarket in Iceland and it was very cool to see
Fantastic collection, you’ve done a wonderful job capture the human element
A really great series of images here. I’m a big fan of black and white, and I think you’ve presented a human feel to the Mexican market place you visited. Safe travels…
These are really impressive! Do you mind sharing what camera you used?
Hey Wyatt, glad you like those. I use a Canon 5D with a 50mm 1,4 lens.
Cheers,
Katja
