Another side of Afghanistan
We all form images in our heads about how a place is going to look; influenced by friends, family, the press, and sometimes an overactive imagination. If someone says Afghanistan, what are the first images that come to mind? For me, the images are those predominantly brought to you in times of terror and disaster featuring foreign forces, explosions and often worse.
A new short film, Afghanistan – touch down in flight, beautifully captures daily life and portrait the real people of Afghanistan. Lukas and Salome Augustin, the filmmakers, hope that the pictures we know will merge with the pictures we see in this film and that we’ll have an enriched view on the country in the Hindu Kush.
What I now see is a country of mystery, beauty, sadness, elegance and one that has been misunderstood for a long time. I’m very intrigued to one day get the opportunity to visit this magical place.
Have you ever been to Afghanistan? We’d love to hear your experiences.

Thank you SO much for sharing these photos. I lived for 8 months this past year in Israel Palestine and it also has a bad rep against some people groups there, specifically Arabs and specifically Muslims. I feel like the world generally tends to write off the Middle East, but the truth is that it’s a place rich with culture, warm with hospitality, and the home to some of the kindest people I’ve met. So thank you for writing this and putting out a good word for Afghanistan and the MIddle East. More people need to travel there!
it looks so beautiful so i find it a shame these sorts of images are not more frequently shared in the press
During the 1970ies, Afghanistan was part of the “Hippie Trail”. The Hippies loved the country. There’s a great documentary available on YouTube (sorry, German only): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyU7G0olzWs
