A Travelette’s Home

Written by 2 April 2012 7 Comments

Let’s face it: As much as we’d love to, we simply can’t be traveling all the the time. Money needs to be saved and friendships need to be cultivated. In the meantime, the only thing we can do to satisfy the traveler within is to dream of future trips and to built ourselves a home our unresting heart feels comfortable in. As a traveler, our whole life becomes a journey – and so should our home.

Here are some great, yet simple ideas that might inspire you…

1. The Tent

Starting with a pretty simple idea: Build yourself a tent at home! Remember how save it felt when you did this as a child? It felt like being in another world, a magical place far far away. And it’s fairly easy to do it as you can see in the pictures below.

2. The Boat Couch

It’s probably not so easy to build your very own boat couch, but I really love the idea of it! Anchored into the ceiling you could close your eyes while swinging back and forth imagining you were sailing the seven seas…

3. The Trunk Table

Now this is something I’m planning to buy the next time I go to the flea market! A trunk is the perfect couch table as it comes in all different sizes. The ideal piece of furniture for every Travelette!

4. The Travel Altar

As travel is our religion, why not worship it in a big way? A travel altar is a place in your home, where you can collect everything that reminds you of your past and future travels. On my altar I keep my travel journals, an old compass my sister once gave me, all kinds of travel literature, shells and and pieces of driftwood I collected and always some fresh flowers. Every time I look at it, the travel bug bites me and my mind sails away…

5. The Suitcase

A suitcase is an allrounder, really. You can use it as a chair, a flower-bed, a dog-basket or simply for storage.

and…. the odds and ends

Finally, let’s not forget the odds and ends you can put in every little corner of your flat. Go to the flea market and buy some ancient letters or old cameras, collect postcards from friends and souvenirs from all over the world, get yourself a globe as a bedside-lamp, so your future travels have the shortest way to enter your dreams…

Oooo I love the travel alter! I think I may have to start implimenting that idea on our fireplace mantle. As a rule I only buy decor items when traveling – never while at home, that way all my decor type items have an interesting travel story to go a long with them!

This is great. I have a little travel altar in my room :) and a few weeks ago I started hunting for vintage valises to turn into nightstands and tables. Great minds!

I have a night stand out of several suitcases and a globe in my living room. But that’s definitely not enough from what I see here ;)
